What is Rural Health Service?
Rural health service is a healthcare system designed to provide accessible, affordable, and quality health services to the rural population. It focuses on:
- Preventive care and treatment
- Health education
- Family planning
- Maternal and child health
To strengthen healthcare in rural areas, the Government of India has launched the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).
Main Objectives
- To provide accessible and affordable health services to all citizens in rural areas, especially the poor and vulnerable groups.
• To expand preventive and curative healthcare services.
• To reduce maternal and child mortality rates.
• To address the shortage of healthcare workers in rural areas and provide them with proper training.
• To promote public health facilities such as sanitation, family planning, and immunization.
Types of Services
- Primary Health Center (PHC):
This is the key unit of rural healthcare that provides primary-level treatment and medical services to the public. - Village Health and Nutrition Day (VHND):
On these days, health workers interact with villagers to provide them with basic healthcare services and information. - Health Education:
People are guided about hygiene, nutrition, disease prevention, and the proper use of healthcare facilities.
